Peter Kay

Last night I got to see Peter Kay live at the AO Arena in Manchestaaa which I have to say is the best standup gig I have ever seen.

No photos mid-performance sadly as recording was forbidden (though most around me ignored that) but I did get a pic of the arena pre-show – 32,000 capacity and packed out.

Most of the crowd were rescheduled from COVID dates, I was lucky to get a rare cancellation ticket at short notice up in the Gods but level with the stage.

Peter has lost heaps of weight and looked almost unrecognisable from the chubby cheeked pictures in the programme and on the posters, but looked health and full of energy.

He started with a sing-a-long of some 80s/90s TV advert jingles (not sure what the toddlers and non-Brits would have made of that) and returned to it in a slick finale, playing shovel guitar over some classic rock tracks, replacing the lyrics. Sounds shit described like that, but on the night and after a couple of glasses of wine it was brilliant. Wait for the DVD this Christmas and find out.

Also managed to navigate the Manchester tram system to get from Salford Quays to the arena then back again amidst the drunken crowds celebrating Pride Weekend. I’ve never seen so many leather shorts in one place before.

So pleased to have finally seen Peter in person, albeit at a distance. Definitely set a new high bar for future standup gigs.
